Research & Development (R&D) plays a critical role in determining the productivity and economic growth of a nation. A robust R&D structure directly contributes to a nation’s sustained growth and creates employment opportunities. The mushroom growth of educational institutes without sufficient/ proper infrastructure, quality teaching, and research machinery produce young engineers and scientists in quantity without significant qualities matching the nation’s requirement. The major quality human resource counter brain drain due to lack of opportunities. There is a big gap between countries' requirements for the lack of scientific training to the researcher, insufficient interaction, and cohesion between research institutes with the Government, industry and the people of the nation. The role of private-sector R&D setups is not playing significantly in countries’ development, only a few of them are active. The phenomena are reverse in developed countries like the USA, Japan, China, etc. India needs the role of private-sector R&D much more for rapid economic growth.
A visionary and veteran academician Prof. Joyanta Kumar Roy, with his rare blend of long-standing experiences mix with industry, teaching, and research had his philanthropic idea to fill up the void to contribute to society. He shared his idea with some of his close associates, veteran academicians, professionals and researchers who extended overwhelming encouragement and guidance to translate his dream into a reality. ESRF is the outcome of the dream project founded as a charitable trust where Prof Roy capitalized his rich experience to set up a Research Center with a Rapid Prototyping Laboratory by investing his family savings. The laboratory, enriched with all basic facilities and ambiance will function as an incubation center and facilitator to the investigators and the researchers against any proposal or scheme that may contribute to the academic, scientific, or technological values.
